Your digestive system isn’t just responsible for breaking down food. It plays a central role in immune function, hormone regulation, mood balance, energy production, skin health , and inflammation control. When the gut is out of balance, the effects are often felt throughout the body. While supplements and other targeted therapies can be incredibly helpful, no tool is more powerful than consistent, foundational habits. These daily practices set the stage for a resilient, well-functioning digestive system. Here are five gut health habits I consider non-negotiable: ## 1. Eat Slowly & Mindfully Digestion actually begins before food enters the mouth. This is called the cephalic phase of digestion, which is activated by the sight, smell, and anticipation of food. It sends signals from your brain to your digestive tract to start producing saliva, stomach acid, bile, and digestive enzymes. When meals are rushed, eaten on the go, or consumed while distracted, the body doesn’t receive these signals properly. This can result in indigestion, bloating, and poor nutrient absorption. Tip: Take a few deep breaths before meals to engage the parasympathetic “rest and digest” system. Chew each bite thoroughly and eat without distractions to support both mechanical and chemical digestion. ## 2. Avoid Snacking Between Meals Contrary to popular belief, frequent small meals can actually hinder digestion for many people. The gut needs time between meals to activate the migrating motor complex (MMC) — a “housekeeping” process that clears out food particles, bacteria, and toxins from the small intestine. This cleaning cycle typically begins 90-120 minutes after eating, but it pauses every time you eat again. Constant snacking can interrupt this process and may contribute to bloating, fermentation, and bacterial overgrowth (such as SIBO). Tip: Focus on 3-4 balanced, nutrient-dense meals spaced throughout the day to activate the MMC and optimize digestive motility. ## 3. Move Your Body Daily Physical activity does more than support cardiovascular and mental health — it also stimulates peristalsis , the rhythmic muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract. Movement enhances blood flow to the gut and activates the vagus nerve , which regulates digestion and motility. Even light movement, such as walking, can significantly improve symptoms of bloating, constipation, and sluggish digestion. Tip: Aim for a light 15-30 minute walk after meals. It helps regulate blood sugar, supports your circadian rhythm, and encourages healthy gut movement. ## 4. Stay Hydrated (But Time It Wisely) Water is essential for producing stomach acid, bile, and enzymes, as well as keeping stools soft and supporting detoxification. However, drinking excessive fluids during meals can dilute stomach acid and impair digestion, especially in individuals with sluggish digestion or symptoms like bloating and reflux. Tip: Prioritize hydration first thing in the morning and between meals. Sipping small amounts of water during meals is perfectly fine (especially with high-fiber foods), but try to avoid large volumes of liquid with food. ## 5. Prioritize Consistent, High-Quality Sleep Your gut operates on its own circadian rhythm, and your microbiome fluctuates in response to your sleep-wake cycle. Inconsistent or poor quality sleep can disrupt this balance, leading to reduced microbial diversity, increased intestinal permeability (aka “leaky gut”), inflammation, and insulin resistance. Sleep deprivation also alters hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin, which can drive cravings for sugar and processed foods — further fuelling imbalances in the gut. Tip: Aim for 7–9 hours of restful sleep per night. Try to keep a consistent bedtime, reduce screen exposure before bed, and create a dark, cool, quiet sleep environment to support gut and overall health. ### Final Thoughts These five habits may seem simple, but they form the foundation for long-term gut health and overall vitality. If you’re experiencing symptoms like bloating, fatigue, brain fog, or skin flare-ups, these lifestyle shifts are an excellent place to start. Your gut has an incredible ability to heal — but it needs consistent support from your daily routines. As a naturopathic doctor, I emphasize that radiant, healthy skin is not just about topical treatments—it starts from within. By nourishing the body, supporting detoxification, and addressing underlying imbalances, we can optimize skin health. Here are some essential ways to support your skin holistically. ## 1. Optimize Hydration Water is the most essential element for skin health. Proper hydration is fundamental to maintaining skin elasticity, supporting the skin barrier, and optimizing detoxification. As our largest detoxification organ, the skin plays a crucial role in eliminating toxins through sweat and sebum (oil). Optimizing hydration is a simple yet powerful way to improve skin health. Additionally, herbal teas like nettle and spearmint contain skin-nourishing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect against oxidative stress and premature aging. ## 2. A Nutrient-Rich Diet A diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods supplies the essential nutrients needed for optimal skin health. Key nutrients include: - Omega-3 fatty acids: Found in salmon, chia seeds, and walnuts, omega-3s help maintain the skin barrier, reducing dryness and inflammation. - Vitamin C: This powerful antioxidant supports collagen production, keeping the skin firm and elastic. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, and kale are excellent sources. - Vitamin E: Known for its skin-healing properties, vitamin E can be found in foods like avocado, almonds, and sunflower seeds. - Zinc: Essential for skin repair and inflammation control, zinc is found in pumpkin seeds, lentils, and chickpeas. Limiting inflammatory ingredients like vegetable/seed oils (canola, sunflower, soybean), refined sugar, processed dairy, and alcohol is also key to achieving clear, healthy skin. ## 3. Support Gut Health The gut-skin connection is well established, with imbalances in gut bacteria (dysbiosis), leaky gut, and food sensitivities contributing to inflammation and skin flare-ups. A healthy gut helps regulate inflammation, immune function, and nutrient absorption—all of which are essential for optimal skin health. Ways to support skin through gut health: - Probiotics: These bacteria promote a healthier gut microbiome, and can be found in fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, and kefir. - Prebiotics: Found in fiber-rich foods like onions, asparagus, and bananas, prebiotics feed beneficial gut bacteria and support optimal digestion. - Bitter greens: Arugula and dandelion greens stimulate digestive enzymes and bile, improving digestion and nutrient absorption. ## 4. Prioritize Sleep & Stress Management Chronic stress can impair skin health, and is a significant contributor to skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. When you’re stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that increases oil production, weakens the skin barrier, and fuels inflammation–leading to congestion, breakouts, and sensitivity. Additionally, stress disrupts digestion, alters the gut microbiome, impairs sleep quality, and weakens immune function, all of which are crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Incorporating stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and regular physical activity can help regulate cortisol levels and support skin health. Quality sleep is just as essential, as this is when the body repairs skin cells, balances hormones, and reduces oxidative stress. Prioritizing rest, self-care, and activities that bring you joy benefits both your mind and your skin. ## 5. Balance Hormones Naturally Fluctuations in hormones, particularly estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol, can trigger breakouts, excessive oil production, or dryness. Supporting hormone health through nutrition and lifestyle can have a profound impact on skin. Tips for supporting hormone balance: - Healthy fats & protein: Ensuring adequate intake of healthy fats (avocados, olive oil, salmon) along with quality protein provides the building blocks for hormone production. - Cruciferous vegetables: Supporting liver detoxification with cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower helps the body eliminate excess hormones and toxins. - Balanced meals: Pairing carbohydrates with protein, fiber, and healthy fats helps maintain blood sugar levels and prevent insulin spikes, which contribute to hormonal breakouts. ## 6. Non-Toxic Skincare Many conventional skincare products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and harsh preservatives that contribute to irritation, breakouts, and long-term hormonal imbalances. Since everything we apply to our skin is absorbed, opting for clean, natural ingredients can help reduce inflammation and support overall skin health. Tips for transitioning to a non-toxic routine: - Read labels: Avoid parabens, phthalates, fragrances, and sulphates, which can disrupt hormones and irritate sensitive skin. - Choose botanical-based products: Formulations with natural, organic oils like jojoba, rosehip, and squalene provide essential fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish and protect the skin barrier. - Simplify your routine: Using fewer, high-quality products reduces exposure to toxic chemicals while allowing the skin’s natural barrier to thrive. ### The Power of a Personalized Approach As a naturopathic doctor, I emphasize a personalized approach to skin health, recognizing that each individual’s skin concerns stem from a unique combination of underlying factors. In addition to providing symptomatic support, addressing the root causes and supporting the body’s natural healing processes is key. True skin health goes beyond the surface—it is a reflection of internal balance and overall wellbeing. By nourishing the body, optimizing gut health and hormones, and choosing clean skincare, we can cultivate radiant, healthy skin from the inside out. Whether it’s along your jawline, across your forehead, or just between your eyebrows, the location of your acne can offer helpful clues as to what’s going on beneath the surface. Acne face mapping is a concept rooted in traditional medicine systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. While it’s not a diagnostic tool on its own, face mapping offers insight into potential internal imbalances that may be contributing to persistent acne. The idea is that breakouts in specific facial zones reflect dysfunction in related organ systems or physiological processes. Below is a breakdown of each zone and what it may indicate from a naturopathic and TCM-informed perspective, along with ways to support healing from the inside out. ## 1. Forehead In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the forehead reflects the health of the small intestine and bladder — two important organs of elimination. When these systems are sluggish or imbalanced, toxins recirculate in the body, often showing up as forehead breakouts. This area is also known to be sensitive to chronic stress and poor sleep hygiene. What might be happening internally: - Candida or bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) - Poor digestive function (low stomach acid or enzymes) - Dehydration or excessive caffeine intake - Disrupted circadian rhythm How to support this area: - Reduce inflammatory and processed foods - Eat slowly and chew thoroughly; limit liquids during meals - Cut back on caffeine and alcohol - Add a pinch of unrefined salt or trace minerals to water - Support elimination with fiber, hydration, and regular movement ## 2. Eyebrows In TCM, the area between the eyebrows is connected to the liver . Acne in this zone may reflect poor liver detoxification, hormone congestion, or emotional build up. TCM also associates the liver with anger and repressed emotions , which can often be reflected through the skin. What might be happening internally: - Hormonal shifts (excess estrogen) - Current or past use of hormonal birth control - Overconsumption of alcohol or processed foods - Unresolved or repressed emotions How to support this area: - Incorporate liver-supportive foods like beets, bitter greens, dandelion - Support elimination pathways with water, fiber, and movement - Reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals; switch to clean skincare & household products - Castor oil packs over the liver area - Explore emotional release tools ## 3. Nose The nose corresponds to the Heart in TCM and is tied to circulation, blood pressure, and inflammation. Breakouts here may be closely linked to stress, sebum overproduction, or blood sugar imbalances. What might be happening internally: - Oily skin or clogged pores - Emotional stress - Insulin resistance or blood sugar imbalances How to support this area: - Reduce processed foods and refined sugars - Balance meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats - Regular movement to support circulation - Consider anti-inflammatory herbs and nutrients (omega-3s, turmeric) ## 4. Cheeks Breakouts on the upper cheeks are often linked to functioning of the stomach , while lower cheek acne (closer to the jaw) reflects lung health . Both organ systems are involved in nutrient absorption and immune regulation — so when they’re compromised, the skin can become reactive, inflamed, and slower to heal. What might be happening internally: - Low stomach acid or sluggish digestion - Gut dysbiosis - Nutrient deficiencies - Allergies or respiratory distress - Skin barrier damage from over-exfoliation How to support this area: - Support digestion with ACV or bitters - Incorporate gut-healing foods (bone broth, fermented foods, aloe vera) - Practice deep breathing - Switch to non-toxic, barrier-supporting skincare ## 5. Chin & Jawline Cystic breakouts along the chin and jawline are one of the most classic signs of hormonal imbalance . This area in TCM reflects the reproductive organs and endocrine system . Acne in this area often worsens during the luteal phase (pre-period), post-birth control, or with conditions like PCOS. What might be happening internally: - Estrogen dominance or low progesterone - Androgen excess - Hormonal shifts from birth control, PCOS, or stress How to support this area: - Increase fiber and cruciferous vegetables to support hormone detoxification - Support regular bowel movements - Balance blood sugar (no skipping meals) - Minimize exposure to endocrine disruptors (plastics, fragrance) ## 6. Neck Acne on the neck is often linked to lymphatic circulation and hormonal flow . Congestion here may result from a build up of toxins, hormonal fluctuations, or sluggish lymphatic drainage. What might be happening internally: - Hormonal imbalance (high androgens or estrogen dominance) - Poor lymphatic drainage - Stress or systemic inflammation How to support this area: - Support lymph flow (rebounding, walking, dry brushing) - Stay well hydrated with mineral-rich water or herbal infusions (nettle, oat straw) - Support hormone clearance via the liver and gut ### Final Thoughts Face mapping can be a helpful tool for uncovering patterns in your breakouts, offering insight into the underlying systems that may need support. However, it’s important to remember that acne is rarely attributed to a single cause. In most cases, it’s a multifactorial condition involving gut health, hormones, stress, nutrient status, and environmental exposures. This is where holistic health shines. Rather than chasing symptoms with topical solutions, we work to understand the deeper roots, and support healing from the inside out. At its core, metabolic health is the state of how effectively your body processes and utilizes nutrients from the foods you eat to produce energy. A well-functioning metabolism supports balanced energy levels, weight management, hormonal balance, and the prevention and management of chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain metabolic disorders. Nutrition plays a fundamental role in supporting metabolic health to keep you feeling stable, energized, and healthy through all stages of your lifespan. ## 1. The Role of Diet in Metabolic Health Your metabolism relies on a steady supply of nutrients, including macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), to maintain balance and fuel your body’s processes. Without the right fuel, metabolic processes can become sluggish, leading to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, blood sugar imbalances, weight gain, and even long-term health issues. Here’s a look at how each of these nutrients works in the body to support metabolic health: - Blood Sugar Balance: Eating in a way that stabilizes blood sugar levels is essential for maintaining energy and reducing stress on metabolic pathways. A diet rich in high-quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, fiber, and healthy fats supports balanced blood sugar levels, while high-sugar or highly processed foods can contribute to metabolic dysfunction over time. - Healthy Fats for Hormone Health: Fats are not only a concentrated energy source but also essential for hormone production and brain health. Incorporating a variety of healthy fats (like omega-3s from fish, avocados, and nuts) can help reduce inflammation, support hormonal balance, and positively impact metabolic health. - Adequate Protein Intake: Protein is vital for muscle maintenance and metabolism. Including protein at every meal helps prevent muscle loss, especially as we age, and can support metabolism by keeping us feeling full, energized, and balanced. Additionally, healthy muscle helps our bodies soak up excess glucose in the bloodstream, keeping blood sugar and energy levels steady to support a healthy metabolism. - Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals are just as important as our macronutrients. They help regulate hundreds of cellular processes in the body, many of which directly influence metabolic health: o B vitamins (found in foods like leafy greens, fish, and whole grains) help your body convert food into energy, supporting efficient metabolism. o Magnesium (in nuts, seeds, and leafy greens) is crucial for muscle and nerve function and is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions that support metabolic and cellular health. o Iron (found in meats, beans, legumes, and leafy greens) carries oxygen to your cells, which is essential for energy production. Low iron levels can lead to fatigue and lower metabolic efficiency. ## 2. Common Dietary Factors That Affect Metabolic Health - While some foods are known to enhance metabolic health, others can disrupt it. Here are a few dietary factors that can hinder or support a healthy metabolism: - Excess Sugar Intake: Consuming too much sugar, especially from sugary drinks or refined carbohydrates, can lead to a cascade of blood sugar spikes and insulin resistance over time. Insulin resistance increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). - Processed Foods and Additives: Foods that are highly processed and filled with additives can be harder for the body to metabolize. Over time, this can place stress on the liver, lead to nutrient deficiencies, negatively impact the gut, and contribute to metabolic dysfunction. Minimize your intake of highly processed foods and focus on real, whole foods instead. - Fiber-Rich Foods for Gut Health: Fiber plays a key role in digestive health and has positive effects on metabolic health by slowing glucose absorption and supporting a balanced microbiome. A diet rich in diverse plant foods will nourish your gut and help keep your metabolism functioning optimally. ## 3. Building a Nutritional Foundation for a Healthy Metabolism To support metabolic health through diet, focus on creating a balanced, nutrient-rich foundation. Here’s how you can start: - Prioritize Whole Foods: Choose real, nutrient-dense foods that provide sustained energy, such as lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats. Whole foods are minimally processed, making them easier for the body to digest and utilize, and are full of essential micronutrients to fuel your health at the cellular level. You can find most of these foods in the outer aisles of your grocery store (e.g. meats, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, whole grains). - Balance Your Plate: Aim to incorporate a source of protein, fat, and fiber-rich carbohydrate at each meal. This balance supports stable blood sugar levels, reduces cravings, and keeps you feeling full and energized. Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein, a quarter with complex carbohydrates, and add a golf-ball-sized portion of healthy fats to top it off. - Stay Hydrated: Water plays a vital role in metabolism, as every cellular process requires hydration to function properly. Aim for adequate water intake throughout the day, and consider adding electrolytes if you’re active, sweating regularly, consuming caffeine regularly, and/or are under a lot of stress (as all these factors can deplete your body of essential electrolytes). Also note that plain water isn’t the only way to hydrate yourself—fluids like broths and herbal teas are rich in minerals to ensure proper hydration of your cells. ## 4. A Holistic Approach to Metabolic Health Beyond diet, other lifestyle factors like physical activity, sleep, and stress resilience play a significant role in metabolic health. Regular movement and prioritizing muscle health increases insulin sensitivity, while quality sleep and stress management help to balance hormones like cortisol, which can otherwise disrupt metabolic function. Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a deeply distressing experience for many couples, often leaving them searching for answers and hope. While traditional investigations may not always reveal a clear cause, recent advances in reproductive immunology have opened new doors—including the use of intralipid IV therapy. Let’s explore why intralipid IV is gaining attention as a positive, innovative approach for those facing RPL. ## What Is Intralipid IV Therapy? Intralipid is an intravenous fat emulsion, originally developed for nutritional support, that has found a new role in fertility clinics. Its unique ability to modulate immune function in the uterus is at the heart of its use in reproductive medicine 2 . ## Why Consider Intralipid IV for RPL? - Targeting Immune Imbalances: Many cases of RPL are believed to be linked to immune system dysfunction, particularly overactive uterine natural killer (uNK) cells. Intralipid IV therapy is thought to help by calming this immune response, creating a more welcoming environment for embryo implantation. - Encouraging Clinical Evidence: Several meta-analyses and clinical studies have shown that intralipid IV can significantly improve pregnancy outcomes for women with RPL, especially when immune factors are suspected. Highlights from the research include: - Higher clinical pregnancy rates - Increased ongoing pregnancy and live birth rates - Reduced miscarriage rates in select patient groups - Safety Profile: Intralipid infusions are generally well-tolerated, with minimal side effects reported in the literature. This makes it a promising option for women who have exhausted other avenues ## Who Might Benefit? Intralipid IV is not for everyone undergoing fertility treatment. It is most promising for: - Women with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss where immune factors are suspected - Patients who have not responded to conventional treatments - Those who have undergone immune testing and have evidence of elevated uNK cell activity or other immune markers ## What to Expect During Treatment - Administration: The infusion is given intravenously, usually before embryo transfer and sometimes repeated in early pregnancy. - Monitoring: Patients are monitored for any allergic reactions, though these are rare. ## Do I Need To Bring Anything To The Appointment? - Recent blood work: If you have blood work that was done in the past 6 months that includes liver, kidney, cholesterol, and blood sugar markers, that is crucial to assess to make sure you are a good candidate for intralipid IV therapy. - Immune markers: If you have blood work showing natural killer cells or other immune markers that is also helpful for the doctors to analyze3. ## A Message of Hope For couples struggling with the heartbreak of recurrent pregnancy loss, intralipid IV therapy offers a beacon of hope. While more research is needed to refine patient selection and protocols, the current evidence is encouraging—especially for those with immune-related causes of RPL. If you are navigating this challenging journey, talk to your fertility specialist about whether intralipid IV might be a suitable option for you. ## References - [https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/infertility](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/infertility) - Anya OC, Ajayi ER, Solanke HR, Ohanaka AI, Ubana KD. It is characterized by a combination of symptoms, including: - Acne (especially deep, cystic acne) - Irregular hair growth (such as on the chin, neck, and back) - Hair loss (such as a receding hairline) - Irregular menstrual cycles - Extremely heavy or light periods - Painful PMS - Unexplained weight gain or trouble losing weight - Infertility or difficulty getting pregnant A holistic, root-cause approach can make a significant impact on managing this condition, reducing symptoms, regulating cycles, and increasing fertility. By supporting cellular health, blood sugar balance, stress resilience, and gut health with targeted dietary strategies, we can help you address the root causes of PCOS and help your body find balance. Here’s how to approach PCOS using holistic nutrition: ## 1. Blood Sugar Balance and Cellular Health Blood sugar dysregulation is at the heart of PCOS for many individuals. Elevated insulin levels can stimulate the ovaries to produce more testosterone, which contributes to common PCOS symptoms like excess hair growth, acne, uncontrollable cravings, and irregular menstrual cycles. Managing blood sugar through balanced meals not only stabilizes energy but also improves insulin sensitivity, helping to reduce these symptoms. Tips for Blood Sugar Balance: - Aim to include fiber, protein, and healthy fats at each meal to slow down glucose absorption and prevent blood sugar spikes. Eat your fiber first, then your proteins and fats second. - Opt for complex carbs from whole-food sources (like quinoa, potatoes, and oats) over refined grains and sugars. Eat these last (after your fiber, proteins, and fats). - Prioritize building muscle in your workouts through regular resistance training. Walk 15-20 minutes after meals to improve glucose absorption and keep blood sugar steady. ## 2. Stress Management and Adrenal Health Chronic stress can exacerbate PCOS by dysregulating cortisol levels, which in turn can worsen insulin resistance and inflammation. By supporting adrenal health, we can help mitigate this effect and allow your body to better handle stress to maintain a healthier hormonal balance. Adrenal Support Tips: - Regular practices like deep breathing, yoga, or meditation can help regulate cortisol levels. Schedule rest days and small breaks into your calendar so you make it a priority. - Build a strong resilience to stress by exercising regularly, challenging yourself in a healthy way, and incorporating strategic hot/cold therapy into your routine. - Ensure sufficient intake of B vitamins, magnesium, and vitamin C, which are essential for adrenal health to help manage stress naturally. For help getting the right things in your diet, [book a call with Naomi the Nutritionist at Clementine.](/naomi-murray-rhn) ## 3. Gut Health and Inflammation Research suggests that gut health plays a crucial role in managing PCOS. An imbalance in gut bacteria (dysbiosis) can contribute to inflammation and metabolic issues that worsen PCOS symptoms. By focusing on strong gut health, we can reduce inflammation, enhance nutrient absorption, and improve hormonal balance. Gut Health Tips for PCOS: - Include a diversity of fiber-rich foods (like leafy greens, root vegetables, and chia seeds) to feed beneficial bacteria and promote a diverse microbiome. - Incorporate fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt, which are rich in probiotics and support gut health. - Support your gut through the Gut-Brain Connection. When it’s time to eat, remove distractions and take a few deep breaths to activate your parasympathetic nervous system (your “rest and digest” state) and improve the breakdown of your food. ## 4. Hormonal Balance through Anti-Inflammatory Foods PCOS often involves chronic low-grade inflammation, which can further disrupt hormone function and lead to common symptoms like acne, heavy periods, painful PMS, and irregular cycles. Following an anti-inflammatory diet can reduce inflammatory markers, improve insulin sensitivity, and support overall hormone health. Anti-Inflammatory Foods to Prioritize: - Turmeric and ginger: Both are potent anti-inflammatory spices that can easily be added to meals or taken as supplements. Try making a curry or stew with turmeric, or sip on lemon-ginger tea! - Berries and leafy greens: These are high in antioxidants, which combat oxidative stress and inflammation. Try a mixed berry smoothie as a snack and add an extra serving of greens to your dinner. - Omega-3s from sources like wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, flaxseed, and chia seeds, which support anti-inflammatory pathways. Try meal prepping a chia pudding for breakfast and topping it with mixed berries. Have fish for dinner or lunch 2-3 times/week. ## 5. Muscle Health and Physical Activity Building and maintaining lean muscle is beneficial for managing PCOS. Muscle tissue acts as our body’s main reservoir for glucose, so by increasing muscle mass, we improve insulin sensitivity. Ultimately, this enhances metabolic rate and can help balance blood sugar. Muscle Health Tips for PCOS: - Include protein-rich foods with every meal to support muscle maintenance and recovery. Aim for 20-30g of protein at every meal, especially at breakfast. - Consider strength-training exercises 2-3 times per week to build lean muscle, increase insulin sensitivity, and support metabolic health. - Ensure adequate intake of magnesium (from leafy greens, cacao, nuts, and seeds) and amino acids from protein for muscle health and recovery, especially if engaging in regular physical activity. Incorporating these approaches provides a well-rounded, holistic strategy to help manage PCOS symptoms and support long-term health. By focusing on these foundational aspects of health, you can address some of the root causes of PCOS rather than just treating the symptoms at a surface level. ## More Support For more support with managing your PCOS and optimizing your hormonal health through food, book a call with Naomi, our [Registered Holistic Nutritionist](/naomi-murray-rhn) . It is a framework that acknowledges and honours each individual’s story. When you go to a doctor’s appointment, you don’t always get a chance to tell the full story behind your symptoms and why they may have manifested. Narrative medicine highlights the idea that truly being heard can be therapeutic. Basically, it’s a fancy term for being listened to. Narrative medicine encourages us to move beyond the ideology of "how do I treat this symptom?" to the more holistic approach of "what does my patient need?" In many instances, our patients need our enthusiastic support, our time, and the space to share their stories. Not every patient is ready to take on the lifestyle changes, the complicated pill routine or the referral wait times all at once. One baby step at a time, we listen, we encourage, and we move the needle for these patients to thrive after finally feeling heard and respected. ## How can narrative medicine help me? Something that is said to me in almost every appointment is “wait, you don’t think I’m crazy!”. I certainly don’t think any patient should be labelled as crazy. Your symptoms are real, otherwise you wouldn’t be seeking care. Mistrust in healthcare is universal. I know I’ve been dismissed many times, and I have probably dismissed others without recognizing it – no healthcare professional is perfect 100% of the time, but we can always strive to be better. It’s time we start listening to the experiences of our patients, taking them in fully and caring for the stories they haven’t had the chance to tell. Years ago, I complimented a mentor of mine for her easy-to-understand analogies she used to explain complex physiology to her patients. Her response was that she always treats patients like the are smart because they are! As clinicians we can provide the opportunity for transparency and mutual dialogue with our patients. Patients have always provided me with insight, thought provoking questions and new evidence for their concern. We validate your stories and bear witness to your resilience, and this leads the practitioner to absorb, reflect and become more creative in the process. Our appointment is like a symbiotic relationship where we get to learn and grow from one another. ## How can narrative medicine help me as a doctor and how do I learn it? Clinician burnout is real! More and more doctors are opting for administrative jobs that allow them to step away from seeing patients on a daily basis. Dr. Rita Charon, the trailblazer of narrative medicine, noticed that narrative medicine programs began to spread across the country. Some physicians trained in its principles began to notice how it can protect clinicians from feeling a sense of depersonalization and other symptoms of burnout. Narrative medicine provides a layer of protection to us as doctors. In an exercise conducted by Dr. Sneha Mantri at Duke University, students read a selection from a neurology textbook about migraine symptoms and the changes in the brain when a person experiences a migraine. They then read Joan Didion's essay, “In Bed,” in which she describes her personal experience with migraines. Students were asked to compare the two readings and discuss what each perspective offered to the other. Then the students re-wrote one of their own medical notes from the point of view of the patient. These types of exercises help students and doctors alike to step away from the burnout-inducing dissociation of treating chronically ill patients with difficult-to-manage symptoms to gain a new level of empathy for a patient's experience. It also serves as a reminder that knowing medical facts is just one part of caring for a patient. In conclusion, we’re here to listen to your stories and help with the heavy lifting along the way. Allowing yourself to tell the story can help your doctor better understand your concerns and the direction they need to steer. One such treatment gaining popularity for its potential to support cellular health and rejuvenation is NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) injections or IV therapy. As a naturopathic doctor, I believe in addressing the root causes of health concerns and using therapies that promote the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Let’s dive into what NAD+ is, how it works, and why NAD+ injections or IV could be an effective tool in optimizing your health. ## What is NAD+? NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every cell of your body. It plays a crucial role in a variety of essential biological processes, including energy production, DNA repair, and maintaining cellular function. Essentially, NAD+ helps our cells function optimally, allowing us to feel energized, recover from stress, and perform essential functions for survival. However, as we age, our levels of NAD+ naturally decline, which can contribute to the aging process and various health issues. This reduction has been linked to conditions like chronic fatigue, cognitive decline, and even metabolic diseases. ## How Do NAD+ injections or IV Work? While NAD+ is naturally produced in the body, NAD+ injections or IV deliver the compound directly into your bloodstream. This approach bypasses the digestive system, ensuring higher bioavailability and quicker results. The infusion of NAD+ can quickly raise your body’s levels of this important coenzyme, restoring balance and improving your body’s ability to carry out essential functions. ## Key Benefits of NAD+ injections or IV 1. Enhanced Energy Levels One of the most immediate and noticeable benefits of NAD+ injections or IV is the increase in energy levels. NAD+ is a crucial component of the mitochondria—the powerhouse of your cells—where energy (in the form of ATP) is produced. By boosting NAD+ levels, you can enhance cellular energy production, leading to an overall improvement in vitality and reduced feelings of fatigue. 2. Promotes Healthy Aging As we age, cellular function starts to slow down, and the ability to repair and regenerate cells diminishes. NAD+ has been shown to support the activation of sirtuins—proteins involved in the regulation of aging and cellular repair. By improving NAD+ levels, we help our cells maintain their function longer, potentially slowing down the aging process and protecting against age-related diseases. 3. Supports Brain Health and Cognitive Function NAD+ plays a key role in maintaining brain function by supporting mitochondrial health and promoting the repair of DNA damage. Studies have shown that NAD+ levels are directly linked to cognitive performance. By increasing NAD+ in the brain, you can potentially improve memory, focus, and overall cognitive clarity. 4. Improves Mood and Reduces Anxiety NAD+ is involved in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine—chemicals that regulate mood and emotional well-being. By restoring NAD+ levels, individuals may experience better mental clarity, reduced anxiety, and an improved sense of well-being. For those struggling with stress or mood imbalances, NAD+ injections or IV can provide an additional layer of support. 5. Supports Detoxification and Addiction Recovery NAD+ is also being used as a complementary therapy for detoxification, especially in addiction recovery. NAD+ helps repair damaged brain cells caused by drug and alcohol use, and it has been shown to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, providing individuals with a smoother transition during the recovery process. In many cases, it can also accelerate healing and support mental clarity. 6. Boosts Metabolism and Supports Weight Management One lesser-known benefit of NAD+ injections or IV is their potential to support metabolic health. As NAD+ plays a critical role in energy production and fat metabolism, higher levels of this coenzyme may help regulate weight by enhancing metabolic efficiency. Those looking to optimize their weight management efforts may find NAD+ injections or IV to be a valuable addition to a balanced lifestyle. 7. The Role of NAD+ injections or IV in Holistic Healing As a naturopathic doctor, I always look for treatments that not only address symptoms but also help restore balance to the body as a whole. NAD+ injections or IV are not a quick fix, but rather a therapeutic option that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate. When used in combination with a healthy lifestyle—such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity, stress management, and adequate sleep—NAD+ therapy can be a powerful tool to improve overall wellness and vitality. Is NAD+ Therapy Right for You? Before considering any new treatment, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure it aligns with your individual health needs and goals. NAD+ injections or IV may be especially beneficial for those looking to optimize energy, support healthy aging, improve mental clarity, and enhance overall well-being. If you are considering NAD+, be sure to seek a trusted naturopathic doctor who can guide you through the process, monitor your progress, and adjust your treatment as necessary to maximize the benefits. Conclusion NAD+ injections or IV have gained attention as a potent therapy with the potential to support many aspects of health, from increasing energy and mental clarity to improving the body’s ability to heal and regenerate. As a naturopathic doctor, I believe that supporting your body’s natural processes with therapies like NAD+ injections or IV is an effective and holistic approach to overall health and vitality. Whether you are experiencing fatigue, cognitive decline, or simply want to boost your energy and slow the aging process, NAD+ therapy may offer a solution worth exploring. Your ND can recommend which protocol and method of delivery is right for you. Take a proactive approach to your health—your body will thank you for it! Nutrition plays an essential role in laying the groundwork for overall wellness, and a thoughtful, well-designed diet can amplify the effects of your treatment plan. Here, we’ll explore what working with a Holistic Nutritionist entails, the benefits of personalized nutrition, and how it can help you achieve sustainable, long-term health at Clementine. ## Nutrition as the Foundation for Your Health Journey Good health starts with what we eat every day. Food fuels every cell and system in our bodies, and without a balanced diet that meets our unique needs, other treatments or supplements may only go so far. Simply put, nutrition is the foundation upon which optimal health is built, and it can be challenging to make meaningful progress if our diet isn’t aligned with our goals. By working together, we ensure that your diet is not just nutritionally complete but is also tailored to your specific health needs, supporting every aspect of your well-being. At Clementine, we believe that your nutrition plan should work with your treatment plan, not in place of it or as a quick fix. Rather than solely relying on supplements, we prioritize real, nutrient-dense foods that address your body’s needs and complement the work being done by our NDs. This combined approach leads to greater efficacy in treating and managing health conditions, and it empowers you to take charge of your well-being in a sustainable way. ## How Our Nutritionist Helps: Setting the Foundation for Success Naomi’s role as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) is to help you build a strong nutritional foundation that supports your health and aligns with your treatment goals.
